Pregnancy & After Birth – Helping Baby Succeed in the First Stage of Baby’s Emotional Development
Executive Summary about Pregnancy Development by Deirdre Morris
Pregnancy, Birth and Emotional Development
During pregnancy and after birth, your baby is growing emotionally as well as physically. Your baby learns about trust in the way in which you communicate to him. Sometimes parents don’t tell baby the truth because we don’t believe it to be necessary or so as to avoid upsetting him.
Baby’s Trust in Pregnancy and After Birth
So, for example sometime during pregnancy or after birth, Dad might leave the house and say that he will be back soon when in fact he will be gone for a few days.
In this scenario what baby learns is:
1. Mom and dad don’t think I can cope
2. What they say is not the truth. So your baby begins to learn to mistrust himself and you.
Baby’s Trust Develops with Truth
Your baby in the womb and outside will feel much more trust and confidence if he knows that what you say is true.
In telling him the truth, that Dad is going away for a few days, you are subtly communicating several important messages to your very perceptive baby:
1. that Dad being gone for a few days is ok
2. that Mom is more that capable of coping
3. that baby is still safe and loved and can easily cope
4. that all is well even if it is a little different and
5. that Dad will be back when he says so
Babies learn my imitation…this includes our emotional habits which baby is learning long before birth.
So give yourself permission to tell your baby what is really going on with the intention that baby learns to trust you, his environment and, most importantly, himself.
